Mel | Baby Sensory | LOVE LOCAL

Tell us about your business…what do you do?

At Baby Sensory we support adults with the learning and development of their babies in a super fun way. We draw on research and the work of child development theorists and childcare experts to offer a holistic approach to learning and development from birth to 13 months. Our multi-award winning, carefully structured sessions provide ideas for play, exercise, massage and communication techniques, taught in simple practical ways that can easily be repeated at home. Each session is different, and each session is a colourful, wonderful sensory adventure, using amazing equipment designed to stimulate and feed curiosity. Lots of singing, signing, musical instruments, puppet shows, light shows and bubbles to excite baby's (and adult’s) senses.

The classes are very sociable for the grown-ups too and great friendships are formed in class.

What makes your business unique/special?

The rich and varied sensory experiences make it very different from other baby classes. We have a huge range of equipment, musical resources and developmental resources that enable adults to interact with their babies in every possible way. Much of the carefully designed and sparkly clean equipment and many of the songs are unique to Baby Sensory. Even though we hold our sessions in many different venues, parents are constantly amazed by the quality, quantity and variety of props we produce each week.

What item/service on your menu or in your shop do you just LOVE and think everyone needs?

BUBBLES! What is a world without bubbles? The babies are just mesmerised and they have a positive outcome to learning too. Oh, sorry I need two – our twinkly lights are just beautiful.

In what way have you gone above/beyond in the past for a customer?

Our babies are everything to us. Babies often join us from only a few weeks old and we watch them grow and develop until lots are even walking by the time they leave and what a journey that is. Often Mummies find those first months, not just totally amazing, but pretty hard too and it is part of our job to try and help if we can. Not always big things, just to be a reason for Mummies to leave their house is the biggest thing of all. We aim to be an uplifting little safe haven and support for parents. At the end of every term, as babies graduate, we receive the most amazing cards thanking us for how Baby Sensory helped them through some of the harder times. Sometimes we are not even aware of the impact we are having until we open those cards and read those heartfelt messages.

What are you passionate about outside of your business?

My children! Dull answer I know but my work life balance is dire and the truth is I work all night so I can try and have fun with my kiddies during the days ( it is 01:03 in the morning as I write this). No time for hobbies alas.

Describe your perfect day?

Hubby not working! Our wee family of four off on an adventure. Heligan is one of our favourite days out. Oh and it would be nearly Christmas (I am a total Christmas nutty!).

What other local business to you love and why?

Turtle Tots. I take my little boy and just cherish that half hour each week when it’s just him and I.

What’s your favourite biscuit!?

Oh easy, Party Ring every time. Get in my belly you pastel coloured beauties!
